Resolution
By admin | April 9, 2009
It is desirable to have a proof procedure that carried out in a single operation the variety of processes involved in reasoning with statements in predicate logic. Resolution is such a procedure which gains its efficiency from the fact that it operates on statements that have been converted to a very convenient standard from. Resolution produces proofs by Refutation. That is order to prove that a statement is valid, resolution attempts to shoe that the negation of the statement produces a contradiction with the know statements. Before explaining in detail the technique of proof by resolution, we consider the conversion of statements to the standard from called clause from.

The traveling salesman problem
By admin | April 7, 2009
A sales man has to visit a number of cities exactly once. There are direct roads between each pair of cities. The salesman has to find the shortest trip that both starts and finishes at any of the cities. A systematic control structure may solve the problem as follows explore all possible paths, find the cost of each path and return the one with the shortest length. If there are n cities, the number of different paths is (n-1)! The time required to explore one path is proportional to n. Hence the time required to perform this is n! Even when n=20 it will take a large amount of time. This phenomenon is called combinatorial explosion. To combat it, we need a new control strategy. A control strategy which may be used for this problem is called branch-and-bound.

Battle of the ironclads
In March 1862, the naval station of Norfolk, Virginia out the former federal steam frigate Merrimac under the new name Virginia by building an iron super-structure and fixing a ram over it. This ship sank two wooden ships of the federal navy. The southerners claimed that Virginia would sweep the entire federal fleet from the seas. However, after some time the federal navy put its ironclad monitor on sea, which was easier to handle and was mounted with revolving turret. The two ships clashed within each other, though either of them failed to inflict damage on the other. This was the first battle between the ironclads and virtually ended in the victory of the north because Virginia never appeared again.

Proclamation of Emancipation
By admin | April 5, 2009
Right from the start of civil war had been exerted on Lincoln to declare the war as a crusade for the abolition of slavery, but he had resisted it on the ground that it might alienate the four slave states that had not seceded, and antagonize the conservatives of the north. After the Antietam victory it was the clear that north’s victory would lead to the end of slavery. To win the support of the liberal opinion in Europe, Lincoln issued his proclamation of Emancipation on September 22, 1862, in his capacity as commander-in-Chief of the Army.

The system Concept
By admin | April 3, 2009
You might have observed by now that we have been referring to a computer as a system. What can be reason behind this? A system is a group of integrated parts that have the common purpose of achieving some objective(s). A computer is made up of integrated components that work together. The input or output units cannot function unit they receive signals from the CPU. Similarly, the storage unit or the CPU alone is of no use. So the usefulness of each unit depends on other units and can be realized only when all units are put together to from a system

Working with Directories
By admin | March 31, 2009
Directory is special file that is used to organize files and directories into categories. Assume that there are 1000 files in a hard disk and all are in the same place then it is very hard to manage the entire files. Those who are working in the directory can easily delete or rename it. So, we create sub directories to manage all the files. Every disk has at least one directory, i.e. root directory. We can create subdirectories into the root directory. A directory can have another subdirectory or files. We can add directories at any level of structure as long as there are no more than 512 files and directories in the root directory. Other directories can contain as many files and directories as needed.
